Sylvia Pearle Holmberg-Van Norman, the daughter of Daniel Christian and Lola I. (Moore) Van Hoven, was born May 20, 1926 in Dickens, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Dickens, where she received her education, graduating from Dickens High School in 1943.
Sylvia married Raymond Dean Holmberg on March 20, 1949 at the First Congregational Church in Spencer. Following their marriage, they farmed in the communities of Harris, Ruthven and Spencer for many years. They retired from farming in 1965. Sylvia worked parttime for a credit union in Spencer, for many years, until her retirement. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Spencer. She also was involved with the American Legion Auxiliary and the Square Dance Camper's Association.
On May 1, 2004, Sylvia married Arlan "Jack" Van Norman at the First Congregational Church in Spencer. They were blessed with over five years of happiness together.
Sylvia passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Monday, January 4, 2010 at the age of 83. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Raymond Dean Holmberg; two brothers: Ed and Fred Van Hoven and a brother-in-law, Milo Myers.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Arlan D. "Jack" Van Norman of Swea City, IA; one son and his wife, Richard & Patricia Holmberg of Emmett, Idaho; one daughter and her husband, Jeannette & Lawrence Swenson of Spencer; two sons by marriage: John & Robin Van Norman and Chuck and Joan Van Norman; four granddaughters and their husbands: Heather & Brian Benson, Erin & Shawn Johnson, Kayce & Landon Meyer and Andrea Swenson; 5 grandchildren by marriage and their spouses: Tina & Greg Huberg, Stephanie & Craig Fox, Jillian & Jim Krieg, Bryan Van Norman and Katrina Van Norman; 9 great grandchildren: Brennan, Landon, Aidan, Allie, Keegan & Miriam Benson, Perry & Weston Johnson and Andrew Meyer; 8 great grandchildren by marriage: Amber Leonard, Justin and Caleb Huberg and their families, Autumn & Brantley Fox, A.J., Nick & Emerson Krieg; 3 sister-in-laws: June Myers, Rosie Van Hoven and Elsie Van Hoven; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M., Friday, January 8, 2010 at the First Congregational Church in Spencer.
