Terry Donald Steffen, second son of Donald Clarence and Lucile May (Olson) Steffen was born on February 23, 1952 in Spencer, Iowa. He was baptized, confirmed, and learned to make homemade ice cream at the Rossie United Church of Christ. Terry attended Greenville-Rossie and Clay Central schools in Rossie, Greenville, and Royal. After graduation, Terry attended Iowa State University in Ames. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Farm Operations, graduating on his birthday in 1974.
While baling hay for Ben and Carol Albers in 1968, Terry met the farmer’s daughter, Marcia Rae. The high school sweethearts were united in marriage at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal on March 16, 1974. By December of that year, the young couple had moved to the farm where they would live, love, and farm together for the next 43 years. The Happy Hog Haven produced corn, soybeans, hay, cattle, and of course, pigs. Terry was a farmer through and through – never “just a farmer” he was proud to be a caretaker of his animals and a steward of the earth.
Terry passed away on Friday, November 17, 2017 after a farm accident. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Steffen and his father-in-law, Benjamin Albers. Cherishing his memory are his wife, Marcia; his children: Katie Marie Steffen of Des Moines, Heidi Rae and Paul Mogush and their sons Benjamin John and Gilbert Donald of Minneapolis, Jessob Terry Steffen and Marra Patton and their family, Ayslyn Marie, Skye Kellyann, and Jackson Jessob of Rossie, and Yannick Perrin and Hassan Sadri and their sons Darius and Keyvan of Rolle, Switzerland; his mother, Lucy Steffen and mother-in-law Carol Albers, both of Spencer; siblings and siblings-in-law; his church family; as well as countless friends and neighbors.
Terry will be remembered for his faith, kindness, ability to make something out of nothing, laughter, and his never-ending love for his wife, children, and grandchildren. Blessed be his memory.
