Thomas Elsworth Phillips, the son of Elsworth and Barbara (Bauer) Phillips, was born May 19, 1941, on the family homestead near Linn Grove, Iowa. He received his education at Rossie Community School, graduating in 1959 as class valedictorian. Tom entered the U. S. Army in 1962, and was stationed in South Korea as a military policeman until his honorable discharge in 1964.
After the military, he worked on the family farm near Linn Grove. He was also employed at Eaton Corporation as a machinist for 16 years, and Sioux Valley Care Center in Sioux Rapids in the maintenance department for 6 years. Thomas enjoyed demolishing old barns and repurposing the lumber, and took pride in reestablishing the family grove. He also enjoyed fishing, bringing new life to old things, and his dog, Katie.
Tom passed away on Tuesday, December 24, 2013, at the age of 72. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Maureen; and one sister, Pat Tully.
Left to cherish his memory are his two children, Monica Phillips and husband, Dan Anderson of Albertville, MN, and Michael Phillips and wife, Jennifer of Cibolo, TX; three grandchildren: Avery, Alex and Crosby; and his special friend and companion, Shirley Scadden of Rembrandt, IA; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Memorial services will be held 10:00 A.M., Monday, December 30, 2013 at the Warner Chapel in Spencer.
