Thomas John Hegel, the son of John and Clementine (Scheetz) Hegel, was born October 12, 1941 in New Salem, ND. His childhood years were spent on a ranch outside of Elmont, ND, where he received his early education at country schools, later graduating from Elmont High School. He entered the military and served with the U.S. Army, where he met his future wife, Mary Jo during his service time in Omaha. He was a MP in the Army, where he was a member of the Canine Corps as a dog trainer at the Treynor Missle Base outside of Council Bluffs, IA. He worked for an auto dealer as a mechanic in Council Bluffs after his honorable discharge from the Army.
Tom married Mary Jo Kosta and they moved to Everly, Iowa in 1968. He worked as a tractor mechanic for Harms Implement and in 1975, started farming in Peterson, IA. Tom bought the Allis Chalmers dealership in Everly in 1984 and renamed it Corn Belt Equipment, which the family operated for many years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Everly. Tom enjoyed bowling, golfing, dancing at clubs and snowmobiling. He was also a member of the Pork Producers and helped start the “Chop Shop” at the Clay County Fairgrounds. Tom was also a member of the Everly American Legion. Tom and Mary Jo enjoyed spending their winters in Arizona.
Tom passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at the age of 76. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: Joe, Pete, Matt, Edward and Leonard and one sister, Betty Steckler.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary Jo of Everly; one daughter, Roxanne (Chuck) White of Okoboji and one son, Ron (Jan Dehrkoop) Hegel of Everly; his grandchildren: Amanda Madson, Nick Madson and fiancé, Shawnda Carlson, Chris (Morgan Haviland) Hegel and Jon (Mercedes) Hegel; 2 great grandchildren: Kenidee Madson and Reghan Hegel; one sister, Rose Reinboldt of Bismark, ND; three brothers: Raymond (Pat) Hegel of Seattle, WA, Jerry (Iona) Hegel of Bismark, ND and Delbert (Janice) Hegel of Phoenix, AZ; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
