Thomas Charles Steinkamp, the son of Edward and Marjorie (Wittrock) Steinkamp, was born May 24, 1955, in Carroll, Iowa. His childhood years were spent on the family farm near Wall Lake, Iowa. He received his education, graduating from Wall Lake High School. Following high school, he worked at several places before becoming a police officer in Wall Lake. He then was a police officer in Sac City, Iowa, and also attended the Police Academy. Tom became a police officer in Spencer in 1982. In 1985, Tom applied to the Iowa State Patrol and also attended the Iowa State Law Enforcement Academy. Upon graduation, he worked in Sydney, Iowa, before moving to Spencer, Iowa, where he worked until his retirement in 2012. Tom was a volunteer firefighter in his earlier days and a licensed EMT. One of Tom’s platforms while in the Iowa State Patrol was teaching young kids the importance of driving safely. He taught driver’s education in various counties around the area. Tom taught CPR and various other medical classes to officers. Tom enjoyed patrolling the grounds at the Iowa State Fair for many years.
Tom married Cindy Rietsema on August 27, 1988, in Spencer, at the Hope Reformed Church. The couple made their home in Spencer where they raised their three boys. Tom enjoyed helping his friends, family and anybody who needed assistance. Tom didn’t like to sit around unless he was sitting on his deck with a cup of coffee and visiting and enjoying nature. He helped Kent and Sandy Thiessen and Bill and Colleen Gerdeman on their farms with planting and harvesting. He and Cindy worked together on remodeling several properties and selling them. He enjoyed boating and traveling. He and Cindy took trips to Alaska, Hawaii and Europe and enjoyed spending time in Florida during the winter since 2012.
Tom passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Friday, August 2, 2019, at the age of 64. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Ronald and David; and one sister, Mary Lou Halbur.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Cindy of Spencer, IA; three sons: Tyler (Lindsey) of Marion, IA, Cody (Brittney) of Milford, IA, and Ryan of Milford, IA; three step-grandchildren: Elizabeth, Jeremiah and Addysen; his siblings: Larry (Peggy) Steinkamp of Waukee, IA, Kenny (Janet) Steinkamp of Auburn, IA, Bob (Kim) Steinkamp of Primghar, IA, Randy (Lynette) Steinkamp of Ft. Dodge, IA, Rick (Sara) Steinkamp of Wall Lake, IA, and Marilyn (Michael) Kuchar of LaPlata, MD; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and many, many friends.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been set up in his name.
