Tom K Hickerson

Tom K Hickerson, 73, passed away peacefully at Lakes Regional Healthcare, Spirit Lake, IA, on November 19, 2013. Tom was born in Des Moines, IA on September 22, 1940 to Wilson and Roberta Reynolds Hickerson. Tom graduated in1958 from Theodore Roosevelt High School, Des Moines. He was a high school All-American swimmer in the individual 200 free style event and the free style relay that placed first in the nation. Tom was awarded a four year swimming scholarship to Northwestern University, Evanston IL, graduating in 1962 with a degree in political science. During his sophomore year, Tom placed first in 13 consecutive swim meets in Big 10 competition. He was a co-captain of the swimming team his senior year, a life long member of the N Club and a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Tom enlisted in the US Army in 1962 and served honorably in the Army Reserves for six years. Tom married Dianne Woltz in 1961 and they moved to Des Moines, IA in 1964 where their son Steve and twins, Mark and Mary were born. They moved to Spirit Lake, IA in 1970 and raised their family there. Tom began his insurance career with Farm Bureau. He was a field manager for State Auto Insurance traveling the state of SD and had a similar position with General Casualty Insurance. Later he changed careers and was a realtor in the Lakes Area for over 10 years. Tom is survived by his son Steve and wife Sue and their children Katherine, Emily and David of Overland Park, KS; son Mark and his children Meredith, Drew and Caden of Spirit Lake, IA; and daughter Mary Vande Brake and her husband Steve and their children April, Kyra and Nora of Orange City, IA. Survivors also include his younger brothers Ken Hickerson and his wife Andrea of Mission Hills, KS, Michael Hickerson and his wife Leslie of Three Lakes, WI, five nephews and one niece. His parents preceded Tom in death. The family suggests memorials to Roosevelt High School Foundation, PO Box 12087, Des Moines, IA 50312.
SERVICES
Memorial Services will be held at 3:00 P.M., Sunday, November 24, 2013 at Warner Chapel in Spencer.
