Velma Lorena Osborn

Velma Lorena Brott Osborn, the daughter of Roger Dale and Edith Mary Clark Brott, was born October 31, 1921 in Spirit Lake, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in the rural Ruthven area, where she received her education in country schools and later graduating with honors from Ruthven High School in 1940. Following her schooling, she worked as housekeeper and nanny in Spencer. Velma married Lawrence Osborn on August 14, 1945 in Spencer, Iowa. Following their marriage, they lived in the Spirit Lake area until their retirement to Dickens in the 1980's. She was a member of Faith Pentecostal Church in Spencer, where she taught Sunday school. She was also a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Dickens Community Club. Velma enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, crocheting, embroidering, baking pies, playing skipbo, going on drives, taking pictures of old barns and spending time with her family. She was called grandma by many relatives and friends. Velma passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Monday, October 23, 2006 at the age of 84. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, a sister and a grandson, Jeffrey Crumpacker. She is survived by her husband, Lawrence of Dickens; two daughters: Kay Swenson and her husband, Gary of Milford, IA, Karen Crumpacker and her husband, Jim of Nairobi, Kenya; one son, Kim L. Osborn of Long Prairie, MN; four grandchildren: Scott Swenson of Milford, Shane Swenson of Spencer, Jason and his wife, Jill Crumpacker of Indianapolis, IN and Lindsey Hammond of Raleigh, NC; two great-grandchildren: Michaela and Alexis Koudelka; two sisters: Nina Huffman of Camby, OR and Hazel Mooney of Greenfield, IN; one brother, William Brott and his wife, Glenna of Ruthven, IA; a foster-son and nephew, Willie and his wife, Julie Osborn; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
