Velma Sophia Vogt, the daughter of Harry and Ida (Hein) Peters, was born in Clay County, Iowa on a farm northeast of Moneta. She started school in the Moneta Church later in the new building in 1922. When she was 11 years old, her parents moved to a farm southwest of Hartley. Which later was known as the North Liberty Hall Farm. She continued in country school #6 in Center Township.
On June 9, 1935, she married Merle LeRoy Vogt in Hartley at her parents home by Rev. F. Budy. Following their marriage, they lived in Hartley where Merle "Bim" worked in the Huntting Elevator. In 1938, they moved to the John Rinck farm where they lived until moving to her family's farm in 1948. Bim and Velma moved into the town of Hartley in 1973 to the home her parents had built in 1947. Velma lived there until having to go to the nursing home on October 9, 2007. Velma was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Hartley.
Velma passed away on December 1, 2007 at the Baum Harmon Mercy Hospital in Primghar, Iowa at the age of 96. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bim on December 31, 1993; her son Verdon and one grandson, William.
She is survived by her son, Lon Vogt and his wife, Maureen of Hartley, IA; daughter-in-law, Patricia Vogt of Saline, MI; 5 grandchildren: Ellen, Katherine, James, Mark and Kyle; 5 great grandchildren: Ryan, Jessica, Brittany Feldman, Aaron and Luke Vogt; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at the United Methodist Church in Hartley.
