Vera Ray French, the daughter of William L. and Lucy (Schroeder) Ray, was born on April 12, 1923, in Elk, WA. She received her early education in Elk, but graduated from Noxon High School in Montana. Following graduation, she worked as a timekeeper at Fairchild Air Force Base before attending the Kinman Business University in Spokane, WA, where she received a Bachelor of Secretarial Science Degree. After graduation she worked as a court reporter for a short time.
Vera entered into the military on April 27, 1944. She served in the U.S. Coast Guard Women's Reserve, also known as the SPARS during WWII. She was honorably discharged on June 12, 1946, achieving the rank of Yeoman 1st Class.
On December 14, 1946, Vera married Dale French in Spokane, WA. The couple lived in Spokane for about a year and then moved to a farm in Peterson. Vera was very active in the community and was an active member of the Methodist church. She held many positions in the church offices, she was a Sunday school Superintendent and teacher and was involved in the Esther Circle. She played in the handbell choir since it began and also sang in the church choir. She also owned and operated a cake decorating business for about 13 years.
Vera passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and 6 brothers and sisters.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: David French, Eunice Hasley of Los Banos, CA, Stuart French and his wife, Julie all of Peterson and Larry French and his wife, Brenda of Redmond, WA; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; her four sisters: Dorothy Clark of Enumclaw, WA, Sybil Burgess and her husband, Ted of Burlington, WA, Hazel Dryer of Darlene, OR and Virginia Stephenson of Olalla, WA; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00A.M., Monday, December 19, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Peterson.
