Verda Marie Goodale, the daughter of Carl B. and Anna Irene (Anderson) Nelson, was born January 29, 1924, in Ruthven, IA. Her childhood years were spent there where she received her early education and graduated from Ruthven High School. Her sister, Verla, was the class valedictorian and Verda was the class salutatorian. After graduation, she worked as a bookkeeper at the Ruthven elevator and was active in the Zion Lutheran Church playing the piano and organ.
On March 13, 1949, Verda married Deane Goodale at the Zion Lutheran Church in Ruthven. Following their marriage, they lived on a farm north of Spencer and later moved to the Royal area. She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal where she taught bible school, was involved in Jr. missionary group and other various church circles and bible studies. In 1969, they moved to the farm where they currently live today. Verda helped her husband operate Spencer Kart Track and Goodale Sales and Service, she was also a hostess at Stub's Ranch Kitchen. She was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church and the Ruthven Chapter #432 O.E.S. She was also a member of the Glen Pedersen Post #1 Legion Auxiliary for a number of years. Verda enjoyed playing the piano, gardening, spending time with her grandchildren and took pride in the fact that she and Deane took care of their mothers in their home for seven years.
Verda passed away on June 24, 2006, at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 82. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Kenneth; and son-in-law, Steven Dotson.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Deane of Spencer, IA; three daughters: Dorinda Goodale of Spencer, IA, Deanna Hart of Des Moines, IA, and Deborah Zitterich and husband, Stephen of Spencer, IA; five grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; twin sister, Verla Norton of Ottumwa, IA; two brothers: Richard Nelson of Osh Kosh, WI and Verling "Spin" Nelson and wife, Joan, of Lakewood, CO; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 29, at the Bethany Lutheran Church, Spencer, Iowa.

Visitation will begin 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 28, with the family present 7 - 9:00 Wednesday evening at the Warner Funeral Home, Spencer, Iowa.
