Vernice Eileen Feldhacker

Vernice Eileen (De Weese) Feldhacker, was born on May 1, 1922 at her maternal grandparents’ farm homestead of William and Pauline Hauschulz (Howschulz) Plinske, in Franklin Township, south of Onawa, Monona County, IA. She was the second child of eight children, born to Charles Leon (Lon) De Weese and his wife, Elsie Lillian (Plinske) De Weese. As a young child she lived at Blencoe and Turin, Monona County, IA. She attended grade school at Luton, Woodbury County, IA and also, the LaCroix Lakeport #2 country school located in the southeast corner of Section 14 of Lakeport Township, just south of Salix, Woodbury County, IA. Vernice won the Declamatory contest in her school with a humorous speech that she memorized when she was ten years old. She won in the district and was sent to compete in the county and won second prize. In high school she was involved in cheerleading and graduated from Salix Consolidated High School at Salix, IA on May 23, 1940. After high school she worked as a housekeeper, cook and babysitter.

     Vernice met her future spouse, Raymond Peter Feldhacker at a dance at Onawa, IA. They were engaged and had dated over a year when they were married on June 8, 1942, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Onawa, IA by Rev. Bernard Greteman. In 1944, they moved to Spencer, IA where they continued to live the rest of their lives and were blessed with seven children. Her husband passed away on July 10, 1999 at their home in Spencer, after over 57 years of marriage. Vernice was a homemaker, she enjoyed going to LaDanza Club dances, golfing, and playing cards with her friends. At one time she worked at the Bee Hive and JC Penney. She enjoyed composing poetry, and has been known to “yodel” using her talent to entertain the residents at Northshire.

     Survivors include her six children and their spouses: Edward (Elaine) Feldhacker, Oakland, IA; Donald (Deanna) Feldhacker, Lawton, IA; Michael Feldhacker, St. Peter, MN; David (Carole) Feldhacker, John (Sally) Feldhacker, and Laura Feldhacker all of Spencer, IA. Eleven grandchildren: Kim (Bill) Dalke, Debra (Chad) Brown, Denise (David) Reis, DeAnne (Ken) Steffes, Matthew (Nancy) Brown, Chris (Allison) Feldhacker, Beth Feldhacker, Kelly (Chris) Dunham, Hunter Feldhacker, Micah Feldhacker, and Jeremiah Feldhacker.

     Nineteen great grandchildren: Chelon (Mike) Busch, Wade Dalke, Cory Hicks, Austin Alexander, Abby Alexander, Darin Specketer, Hali Brown, Zachary Reis, Allyson Reis, Brooke Reis, Ashley Reis, Lydia Reis, Danielle Steffes, Maxwell Steffes, Calista Steffes, Aaron Brown, Colin Brown, Samara Feldhacker, Mya Feldhacker and Ayla Feldhacker, and three great great step grandchildren, Allie Busch, Will Busch, and Makayla Busch.

     One brother, Gene De Weese, sisters-in-law, Donna Feldhacker, Laura Feldhacker, and Marian Feldhacker.

     In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a stillborn son, William Joseph Feldhacker, on November 20, 1947; a daughter, Londa Marie Brown Long, on May 26, 1994; two granddaughters, Tamara Kay Feldhacker, on July 11, 1968 and Brandee Marie Feldhacker Alexander, on November 19, 2008; two brothers, Glennon De Weese and William (Bill) De Weese; four sisters: Marjorie Daniels, Doris De Weese, Elsie Hubert and Shirley Smith.
