Vern Clayton Olberding, the son of Frank and Victoria “Dora” (Ness) Olberding was born September 26, 1935, in Arcadia, Iowa. When he was young, the family moved to a farm near Odebolt, Iowa. He attended Catholic school through the 8th grade and then transferred to public school. He was a member of FFA and played football. Following high school, he continued to farm and milk cows on the family farm. He purchased two trucks to haul milk for Langley Dairy in Odebolt.
On May 10, 1958, he married Sandy Thornhill. He worked as a lineman for Buena Vista County REC for 16 years. They bought a farm west of Spencer and started farming and had a cow/calf herd. He was involved in an egg production unit and a broiler production for Campbell Soup. Later the broiler unit was turned into a baby pig nursery. He started weaned pigs for eight different producers. After retirement, they traveled some and spent winters in Texas, Florida and Arizona.
Vern passed away October 12, 2021, at Northshire Residence, at the age of 86. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Norman Olberding; sisters: Mardell Ploeger, Elaine Kennedy and Marilyn Thompson.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sandy of Spencer, IA; daughter, Kristi (Brad) Sinn; three grandchildren: Stephen, Zachary and Katie; sister, Sharon Truex of California; brothers-in-law: Kenny (Anne) Thornhill, Mike (Robin) Thornhill, Jeff Cranston, Darrell Bennigsdorf and Steve Brown; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
