Viola Roskens

January 20, 1927 — September 30, 2011

Viola Roskens, daughter of Wilhelm and Engel Meyer Nielsen, was born January 20, 1927 on a farm north of Everly. She attended rural school through the eighth grade, graduating from Okoboji Consolidated High School. She later took a teacher's course at BV College and taught rural schools grade K-8 for 4 years. Viola married Harold Roskens in 1949 and together they farmed north of Everly, while attending First Reformed Church of Everly. After eleven years, they purchased a farm of their own and moved west of Fostoria. In addition to farming, homemaking and raising 5 children, Viola also spent 10 years as a cook at Longhouse Nursing Home. In 1983, they retired from farming and moved to Spencer, transferring their membership to Hope Reformed Church. Viola continued working at the Longhouse/Northshire activity department part-time, as well as at the Spencer Hospital, and volunteering when not participating at the Spencer Senior Center. Viola touched so many lives with her strength, courage and support and was always available to her family and friends whenever they needed her love or listening ear. She loved baking, sewing, crafts and spending time outdoors. She was a proud mother, grandmother and a woman of deep faith. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Susan Sears and her husband Ron of West Okoboji, Sharon Holven of West Salem, WI, Steve Roskens of Ackley,IA, Stanley Roskens and his wife Susan of Tehachapi, CA, and Sidney Roskens and wife Marge of Fostoria; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers: Elmer Nielsen and wife Marge of Spencer and Donald Nielsen and wife Phyllis of West Okoboji; sister-in-law Mildred Klett of Everly; several nieces and nephews and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, and a granddaughter Sara. A special thank you to the staff at Northshire and Iowa Hospice for the wonderful care shown to Viola.
