Virgil John “Corkey” Heinrichs was born April 21, 1928, on a farm near Bridgewater, South Dakota. His parents were Alphonse Heinrichs and Christina Wernimont. Corkey spent his childhood in Carroll County, Iowa, where he graduated from 8th grade at St. Peter and Paul School. In 1947, he began laying floor covering with his brother, Alvin.
On June 1, 1950, he married Louise Winker. They lived in Sac City for 16 years before moving to Spencer in 1966, where he continued to lay floor covering. In 1976, he and Louise opened Corkey’s Carpets in north Spencer. Corkey retired in 1990.
Corkey’s hobbies included pole fishing, bow fishing, ice fishing and rock collecting. He collected rocks from all over the United States and nine different countries.
Corkey is preceded in death by his wife, Louise, in 2014; his parents; son, Kim; a great-grandson, Mathew Schnurr; brothers: Alvin, Edward, Roman, Fritzie; and one sister, Barbara.
He is survived by his children: Keith Heinrichs of Spencer, IA, Kris (Phil) Schnurr of Washington, MO, Kelvin (Laura) Heinrichs of Bradenton, FL, and Kurt Heinrichs of Spencer, IA; sister, Irene Glenn of Oskaloosa, IA; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
