Virgil Eugene Schmeling, the son of Arthur and Rosa (Rambath) Schmeling was born May 30, 1931 near Cylinder, IA. His childhood years were spent in the Terril, IA area, where he attended school, and graduated from Arnolds Park High School in 1947.
Virgil began farming with his dad before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps and serving until his Honorable Discharge. He married Katharyn Wilcox on June 3, 1967 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. They lived in Everly, IA and continued to farm. He then drove his own feed truck and moved to Moneta, IA. He also worked for Witco until its closing and lastly worked at Willow Way until his retirement in 2017 at the age of 86.
Virgil enjoyed fishing, spending time with family, especially his grandchildren, gardening and working on vehicles. He was a member of the American Legion.
Virgil passed away on Monday, August 5, 2019 at his home in Spencer, at the age of 88. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Timothy Eugene; one great-granddaughter, Sara Hill; 2 brothers, Donald and Marvin; and one sister, Alice Shatto.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Katharyn of Spencer, IA; 5 children, Julie (David) Holler of Greenville, IA, Kay Nelson of Spencer, Robert (fiancé, Christine) Hill of LaMars, IA, Katina (Eric) Dahl of Colorado Springs, CO, and Tomas Schmeling of Spencer, IA; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one brother, Gerald (Karen) Schmeling of Burnsville, MN; one sister, Leona (Maynard) Holtz of Everly, IA; numerous cousins; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and many friends.
