Virgil Russell Spiess, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Stone) Spiess was born June 22, 1934 on the family farm near Webb, IA. His childhood years were spent in Webb area, where he attended school and graduated from Cornell High School. Virgil graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Industrial engineering.
Virgil married Dorothy Kraft on December 20, 1953 in Greenville, IA. He worked in Engineering in Minnesota, Missouri, and Eastern Iowa before retiring in 1999. Virgil enjoyed going to plays, camping, traveling and volunteer work, in which he was involved in Lions Club, RSVP, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer, IA.
Virgil passed away on Saturday, June 12, 2021 at St. Luke’s Lutheran Home in Spencer, IA, at the age of 86. He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Julie.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Dorothy; four children: Randy (Denise) Spiess of Whitefish, MT, Steve (Andrea) Spiess of Steamboat Springs, CO, Peggy (Ken) Schmidt of Livingston, TX and Kim (Eric) Huskey of Aurora, CO; nine grandchildren; one great grandchild; two sisters: Wanda (Wayne) Hollenbeck of White, GA and Virginia (Jim) Haddad of San Louis Obispo, CA; one brother, Larry (Darlene) Spiess of Alta, IA; other relatives and many friends.
