Virginia Davis Coughenour

Virginia Davis Coughenour, the daughter of Edward and Elsie Lake Davis, was born February 13, 1919 in Spencer, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Spencer where she received her early education and graduated from the Spencer High School. Following high school, Virginia continued her education at Morningside College, Drake University and Julliard School of Music in New York. While living in New York and attending Julliard School of Music, Virginia met and married Newton Coughenour in 1944. Following their marriage, they lived in the communities of: New York City, New Jersey, Alta, Iowa, Dubuque, Iowa and Winterset, Iowa where Newton served as a Methodist Minister. They also enjoyed spending time in the summer at their cabin at the Lakes. Virginia has been a professional accompanist in New York City, a church organist and choir director; taught piano and voice privately; taught public school music; entertained personally for various groups; has done arranging for various instrumental and vocal groups; coached singers and groups; played most instruments; directed Sweet Adelines and English Handbell Ringers Choir; also had played for several radio shows. She was a member of P.E.O., Winterset Music Club, Des Moines Symphony Guild, Des Moines Women's Club American Guild of English Handbell Ringers and O.E.S. Virginia and Newton were avid travelers who went to all corners of the earth in their travels. Mrs. Coughenour passed away on March 11, 2007 at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by cousins: Burt and Betty Nystrom of Las Vegas, NV, Ronald Phillips of Spencer, IA, Brian Nystrom and Robin Moore of Jackson, WY, Bruce and Holly Nystrom of Milford, IA and Brad and Barbara Nystrom of Hamburg, Germany.
SERVICES
Graveside Services will be held at 2:30 P.M., Thursday, March 15, 2007 at the Riverside Cemetery in Spencer, Iowa
