Virginia Gayle Koenen

August 5, 1920 — September 18, 2017

     Virginia Gayle Koenen, the daughter of Fred and Matie (Gipple) Richter, was born on August 5, 1920 in Anita, Iowa. At an early age, her family moved to Sac City, IA, where she graduated from high school in 1938.

     Virginia married Donald Lester Koenen on May 22, 1940 in Sac City. After Donald’s discharge from the Navy they moved to Spencer in 1946. They built there retirement home on West Okoboji in 1978 and enjoyed many happy times with family and friends before moving back to Spencer in 2005.

     Virginia was a homemaker. She and Donald were involved with their three daughters’ activities and she skillfully sewed most of their clothes. She was a charter member of the Women of the Moose joining in 1948 and over the years was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. Virginia enjoyed playing BINGO and cards and was an avid Cubs fan, loved to read and do search word puzzles.

     Virginia passed away September 18, 2017 at St. Luke Lutheran Home. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald in 2006; infant sister, Betty Jean; sisters: Dorothy Beaver and Marilyn Shugart and son-in-law, John Frans.

     Left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Linda (Tom) Valdahlof of Decatur, IL, Donna “Deaner” Frans of Spencer and Patti (Ivan) Pixler of Custer, SD; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
