Virginia Irene Bellows

Virginia Irene Bellows was born January 30, 1914, near Alta, Iowa, to Ethel Irene Parker and Bert A. Adams. They lived near Alta until her mother's death, December 28, 1918. Virginia lived two years with her aunt and uncle, Dr. and Mrs. Guy Clemons in Storm Lake. After her father's remarriage, the family lived near Alta, and then moved to a farm near Hartley for three years. Then, they moved to a farm south of Spencer. Virginia attended school at Alta, Storm Lake, Moneta country school and she graduated from Spencer High School. She worked for four years in the Clay County Farm Bureau and Extension Office. On October 13, 1935, Virginia married Glen L. Bellows at the Adams' home. She and Mr. Bellows lived eight miles southwest of Spencer until October, 1959, when they moved to their new home in Spencer. They were parents of four children: Glen, Jr., Karen, Alice, and Doris. Mrs. Bellows was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and served on many committees and boards. She and Mr. Bellows were chairmen of the committee to select the pipe organ for the new church. Virginia served as president for the Women's Society for Christian Service for two years, taught Sunday school for many years and sang in the church choir. She was a member of Chapter KF, PEO, past matron of the Eastern Star, mother advisor for Rainbow for Girls for two years and a member of the Grand Cross of Colors. Virginia served as chairman of Lincoln Township Farm Bureau Women, was chairman of the County Extension Home Economics committee and served on the board of Meals on Wheels as a volunteer. She was secretary of the community concert board for four years and on the election board for several years. Virginia gave piano lessons and enjoyed working with young people. She served as organist at Trinity Lutheran Church, for early services at the Methodist Church for several summers and for Thursday evening services, as well as substituting for various churches. Mrs. Bellows traveled widely in this country including to Hawaii and around the world to Mexico, Canada, Scandanavia, Great Britain, Russia, the Far East, Japan and China. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Ruby Adams and by her husband, Glen, on May 3, 1973. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Phyllis Metcalf Thomas of Spencer and her brother, Parker Adams of Spencer. She is survived by her children: Glen and Sylvia Bellows of Bettendorf, Iowa, Karen and Terry Stephenson of Tyler, Texas, Alice and Clem Williams of Missoula, Montana, and Doris and Brian Stevenson of Weatherby Lake, Missouri; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; one sister, Harriet and Wes Heitzman of Dubuque, IA. Virginia resided at St. Luke Nursing Home for the past three years and was loved by her many wonderful caregivers. Memorials may be made out to St. Luke Lutheran Home.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, January 11, 2010 at the Warner Chapel in Spencer.
