Virginia Mae Church

Virginia Mae Hackler Tomford Church, the daughter of Cebert and Nellie (Chase) Hackler was born August 12, 1928, in Storm Lake, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Storm Lake where she graduated from Storm Lake High School. Following graduation she attended one year at Buena Vista College. Following her graduation, Virginia moved to Washington D.C. where she worked for the F.B.I. On July 31, 1947, Virginia was united in marriage to Wendell Tomford in Washington D.C. Following their marriage they resided in Storm Lake where she was a homemaker for many years. Later, she worked for the Department of Human Services as an income maintenance worker. In 1982, Virginia was transferred and moved to Spencer, Iowa, where she later retired after over 20 years of service. Her husband Wendell died in 1972, and she was widowed for 21 years before marrying Cliff Church on August 14, 1993, in Spencer. Virginia was a member of the Church of Christ in Storm Lake, IA and First Christian Church in Spencer. She was an active member of the Christian Fellowship of Women serving as a past president. She also served as a deaconess and Sunday school teacher. In her spare time Virginia loved to read but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. On December 29, 2006, Virginia passed away at the Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 78. She is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Wendell; an infant son, William and her 2nd husband, Cliff. Left to cherish her memory are her three daughters: Sheri (Robert) Williams, of Storm Lake, IA, Vicki Rice, of Spencer, IA, Lori (Kent) Combes of Hartley, IA; two sons: Guy Scott (Cookie) Tomford, of Phoenix, AZ, Kirk (Chris) Tomford of Early, IA; one sister, Shirley Carlson, of Denver, CO; 20 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; as well as other relatives and many friends.
