Vivian Mae Thompson was born, Wednesday, April 10, 1929 to Ruby M. Mumford and Thomas Lee Thompson in Pauls Valley, OK. She was the oldest, having one younger sister. Her father died at a young age. Vivian was raised with the help of her grandparents and aunts and uncles. At the age of 9, her mother moved her and her sister to San Antonio, TX, were they and her step-father were going to start a new adventure. Vivian received her education in San Antonio, TX and helped her mother with 5 younger siblings.
Vivian met the love of her life, Donald Harvey Allen in San Antonio on March 30, 1952 and were married June 30, 1952. They lived in Texas until Don’s Honorable Discharge from the United States Army. They then moved to Sherburn, MN where Don worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. In 1957, they moved to Spencer, IA to raise their three children.
Vivian was a stay at home mother until her children were in school, she then worked as a seamstress at Aalfs for 23 years along with selling Mary Kay until the age of 89 and spent many hours cooking, sewing and she was a talented seamstress.
Vivian was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and was active in the Widow Fellowship Group at Church. She served as a Cub Scout Leader and Brownie and Girl Scout Leader. Vivian loved her family and always put them first.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Thompson and Ruby Taylor; her husband, Don in 1980; her great granddaughter, Makayla Rae; sister, Donnie Lee Faulk; brother, Seburn Taylor and her in-laws: Vernon and Clara Allen; 3 sisters-in-law: Evelyn Stokes, Darleen Allen and Nina Faber and brother-in-law, John Allen.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Linda (Frank) O’Clair of Spencer, IA, Jay Allen of Iowa City, IA and Ray Allen of Langdon, IA; 5 grandchildren: Benjamin (Heidi), Nathan and Adam (Leanne) O’Clair and Jason (Fiance, Kendra Spurgeon) Allen and Tara Allen; 6 great grandchildren: Samantha, Zachary, Abigail, Madalyn, Coleton and Jackson O’Clair; sister, Sherry Jackson; brothers: Kenneth Taylor, Leslie Taylor Sisters-in-law: Linda Taylor, Clare Erickson, Linda Geistfeld, Birdella Allen, Jane (Oscar) Knaak, Judie (Jim) Connor; brothers-in-law: Wilbur (Grace) Allen and Don Faber; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, April 6, 2019 at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.
