Wadena Ann Lorenz

Wadena Ann Lorenz, the daughter of Harley and Stella Ball Walker, was born on her grandparent's farm in Gillett Grove. She grew up on a farm west of Rossie and received her early education and graduated from Rossie High School. She then continued her education at Buena Vista College where she earned a Teachers Associates Degree. Wadena started teaching elementary at Glidden, then two years at Webb, and one year at Spirit Lake. Wadena married James Peter Lorenz on June 20, 1948, in Spencer at the Congregational Church. Following their marriage, they farmed west of Dickens. Wadena stayed home to raise her children and helped Jim on the farm. She then resumed teaching in substitute role for many years. Needing a change, Wadena began working retail for 24 years, most of which was spent at Bjornstad's where she was known as 'Rocky'. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Farm Bureau, Sioux Energetic Club, Clay County Extension Council, 4-H Leader, Moose Women's Auxiliary and Neighborhood Birthday Club. In her spare time, Wadena enjoyed many years of dancing, flowers and gardening, reading, feeding the birds, bird watching and traveling with her husband. Wadena passed away on January 31, 2013, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer at the age of 87. She is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, James on March 13, 1999. Wadena is survived by her three children: Julia Petersen of Robbinsdale, MN, David, and his wife, Lora Lorenz of Spencer, IA, and Janna Lorenz-Mugge and her friend, Jeff Thomas of Spencer, IA; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Ruth Hansen of Spencer, IA; other relatives and friends.
