Walter Fraser Kelley, the son of Wilson F. and Henrietta Aanestad Kelley, was born February 22, 1913, near Sherman, South Dakota. He attended a country school near his home and graduated from Sherman High School in 1929. He graduated from Luther College, where he played football, in 1933. He then attended Nettleton Commercial College in Sioux Falls and began his teaching career in Irene, South Dakota, in 1934. He received additional training from Walton School of Commerce and completed a Master's degree from the University of South Dakota in 1964.
Walter married Mildred Van Ruschen on August 23, 1935, in Salem, South Dakota. They lived in Irene, South Dakota, until 1937, then moved to Hartley, Iowa. Walter taught at Hartley High School until his retirement in 1978. He also was a substitute mail carrier, painter, and accountant. He was an avid golfer and was a member of Hartley United Methodist Church. He moved to the Cedar Rapids area in 2002.
Walter passed away at the Hiawatha Care Center, Hiawatha, Iowa, on Tuesday, May 1, at the age of 94. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and his brother Luvois. He was survived by his two sons: Vance and his wife Marilyn, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Norman and his wife Gayle, of Marion, Iowa. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Vance Kelley, Jr., and his wife Sarah, Melissa Wecker and her husband Brad, all of Overland Park, Kansas, and Sarah Kelley of Marion, Iowa; one great-grandson Reece Kelley; and other relatives and friends.
Three generations of students remember Mr. Kelley as their teacher, and many are those whose successful careers in business were launched through what they learned in Mr. Kelley's classes.
