Walter Erick Schroeder, the son of Johann and Gerhardina (Heeren) Schroeder, was born on August 28, 1916, in Chatsworth, Iowa. He grew up there and attended school, graduating from the eighth grade. He then stayed home to help his father farm. On March 23, 1944, he entered into the military, serving in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was honorably discharged on October 28, 1944.
Walter married Madge Monselle on October 29, 1939 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. The couple moved to Everly in 1944 and lived in town where they raised their four children. After all the children graduated from high school the couple moved to Spencer. Walt was involved in many things throughout his life. He owned and ran in Everly what is now called The Ranch, the Amvet Club and the club under the Water Tower. He and his brother, Ernie also had Shouse's in Hartley. He had a truck line and drove truck. He then began working at Spencer Foods, and was there for 25 years. While at the plant, he built and owned the kitchen that is there. The most memorable occupation of Walt's to the public was his Donut Shop that he ran at the Clay County Fair for 15 years in the 1960's and 70's with his daughter, Jackie. He called his donuts 'Spudnuts.' The lines were always very long waiting for his donuts. Walter and Jackie also owned two other donut shops in Spencer.
Walter, in his 80's, volunteered his time with the RSVP. He drove people to their doctor's appointments. He even received awards from Gov. Terry Brandstad and Gov. Tom Vilsack for his years of service, volunteering. Walter, for several years, drove a bus full of kids to Des Moines for the state girls basketball tournaments. He also enjoyed fishing, but was most passionate about watching Everly girl's basketball.
Walter passed away on April 24. 2011, at the St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer at the age of 94. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1991; 2 sisters; 5 brothers and a son-in-law, Duane Philiph in 1995.
Left to cherish his memory are his three daughters: Memphis Kibbie and husband, Emmett of Emmetsburg, IA, Donna Rae Philiph of Alta, IA and Jackie Wyman of Spencer, IA; one son Terrance of Tempe, AZ; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will take place at 10:30 A.M., Friday, April 29, at Hope Lutheran Church in Everly
