Wayne Elbert Calhoon

     Wayne Elbert Calhoon, the son of Ross and Nellie (Reed) Calhoon, was born August 29, 1936 in Page County, Iowa.  His childhood years were spent near Shambaugh, Iowa in Page County, where he received his early education at Linn Point Grade School and later graduated from Clarinda High School in 1955.  Wayne continued his education at Clarinda Community College in 1957 and later Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa where he received his BS in Agriculture Education I in 1960.  He also finished his Graduate School studies at Iowa State University.

     Wayne married Vada Ruth Sundell on September 2, 1961 in Lenox, Iowa.  After their marriage, they moved to Griswold, IA, where he taught Vocational Agriculture for 5 years.  They later made their home in Guthrie Center, Iowa, where he also taught Voc. Ag.  In August of 1969, they moved to Spencer, Iowa, where he was a farm home agent for Metropolitan Life for 18 years.  The last 11 years of his working life, he was a court Magistrate Court Attendant for the State of Iowa until his retirement in 2001.  Wayne was a past member of the United Methodist Churches in Griswold and Guthrie Center and was a current member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.  He was also a past member of the Lions Club, the Masonic Lodge and the Boy Scouts of America.  Wayne served and retired as Major of the National Guard and U.S. Army after serving for 27 ½ years.

     He passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa on Sunday, January 20, 2019 at the age of 82.  Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Nellie Calhoon; his parents in-law, Karl and Ruth Sundell; his brothers and sisters, Marvin Calhoon, Mildred Sorenson, George Calhoon and Richard Calhoon; his sister in-laws Opal Calhoon, Wanda Calhoon and Beverly Stream; brother in-law, Elmo Sorenson and nephews: Steve Calhoon and David Stream.

     Left to cherish his memory are his wife,   Vada of Spencer, his son, John Calhoon and his wife, Carrie of Flagstaff, AZ; two daughters:  Judi Calhoon and her boyfriend, Tony Schmidt, of Peterson and Karensue Hensley and her husband, Brent of Joplin, MO;  his grandchildren:  Brent, Kaleb, Tyler (Kylie), Noah (Caroline), Trevor, Jayden (Esteban), Jonah, Wyatt, Sarah, and Eric (Heather); his great-grandchildren:  Sierra, Hailey, Jace, Karson, Beatrice, Minerva and Ezequiel Wayne (and one more that will be arriving in February); sister in-laws: Marilyn Calhoon of Lincoln, NE and Peggy Calhoon of McCook, NE and brother in-law, Karl Edward Sundell and his wife, Joyce of St Joseph, MO;  many nieces and nephews and other family and friends.

SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 P.M., Wednesday, January 23, at the Grace United Methodist Church.

There will be a Military Flag Presentation conducted by the American Legion - Glen Pedersen Post #1 and the V.F.W. Clay County Post #3159 of Spencer.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name.

Visitation with the family will be from  5:00 - 7:00P.M., Tuesday evening at the Grace United Methodist Church.
