Wayne Joseph Simington

September 16, 1915 — April 18, 2006

Wayne Joseph Simington, the son of David Gillet and Gertrude O'Brien Simington, was born September 16, 1915 in Spencer, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Spencer, where he received his education, graduating in 1933. Following high school, he attended Iowa State University where he received a degree in Animal Husbandry in 1938. At Iowa State he was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, participated in the Cossacks Horse Riding Team, and was chairman of VEISHA his senior year. He taught vocational agriculture at Inwood, Iowa for one year before returning to Spencer. On June 30, 1940, Wayne was married to Marian Olson at Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer. They lived their entire married life on the family farm in Summit Township, which was homesteaded by Wayne's grandfather, Joseph O'Brien. To this union were born five children: Joseph, David, Kristine, Sarah, and Ann. Wayne farmed the homestead for 25 years, before becoming actively involved in the operations of the Farmers Savings Bank in Fostoria, Iowa. He served as president of the bank until his death. He was a faithful member of Bethany Lutheran Church where he served on various boards and committees. He served on the Clay County Fair Board from 1955-1965 and was a member of the Fair's Executive Board from 1966-1987. Wayne was a charter member of the Parker Historical Museum and served as treasure for 40 years. He was on the Fostoria Coop Elevator board of directors, was a member of the Iowa Great Lakes Saddle Club, and the Spencer Garden Club. Wayne was director of Summit #6 Country School where his five children attended classes. Wayne passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at the age of 90. His parents and his wife, Marian, who died June 23, 1993, preceded him in death. He is survived by his five children: Joseph and his wife, Rosa, of Milford; David and his wife, Sharon, of Spencer; Kristine and her husband Larry Koehnk, of Jewell; Sarah of St. Paul, Minnesota; Ann and her husband Larry Fouts, of Castle Rock, Colorado; eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer.

Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M., Friday with the family present from 5:30 to 8:00 P.M., Friday Evening at Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer. MEMORIALS MAY BE DESIGNATED TO: Bethany Lutheran Church, The Clay County Fair Association, The Okoboji Lutheran Bible Camp or the Parker Historical Society.
