Wayne Morris McMeekin

June 30, 1953 — January 19, 2025

Royal

Wayne Morris McMeekin, 71, of Royal, passed away at his home surrounded by loved ones on Sunday, January 19, 2025, after a hard-fought battle against an aggressive cancer.

Wayne McMeekin was born on June 30, 1953, the second child of John Warren (Bus) and Eleanor (Burley) McMeekin. He graduated from Lake City High School in 1972 and attended automotive tech school in Kansas City, MO. He was employed at Howell Ford and Ron’s DX in Lake City and Carver Ford in Rockwell City. In 1986 he was employed by Don Pierson Ford in Spencer, retiring after 30 years of dedicated service.

Wayne shared his birthday with the Corvette. However, Wayne was always a Ford man. Why have a Corvette when you could have a Ford Bronco? People recognized Wayne by his black 1995 Bronco that he meticulously maintained for many years. While living in Spencer, Wayne met his friend, Tom Sierck, and he helped build IMCA street stock cars. For several years, Wayne worked on the pit crew when Tom raced Saturday nights at area speedways. It was during this time that he was introduced to the love of his life, Kelly Wimmer, through mutual friends. They were married on October 14, 1995 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. Together they have raised son, Dalton and daughter, Payten.

In his free time, Wayne enjoyed spending time with family. He also enjoyed going out to in-laws, Tom and Shelly Tewes, to help farm and work on combines. He served on the Royal Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years going on many fire calls, medical emergencies and helped at the annual firemen’s pancake breakfast. After retirement, he obtained his CDL to help family members haul grain to the elevator. He also enjoyed driving over to Big Spirit to spend time at the Burley cabin and later at his sister’s place on the lake. After he retired, Wayne restored his dad’s Super M tractor.

Wayne will be remembered for his generosity, kindness, witty sense of humor, and his willingness to help anyone who asked. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Kelly, son, Dalton (Jessica) Wimmer of Hartley, daughter, Payten (Tyler) Krebs, and grandson, Brooks Krebs of Lake Park. His siblings: Claudia (Rob) Koch of Peoria, AZ/Spirit Lake, IA, Sue Horton of Abilene, Texas, and brother, Andrew McMeekin of Wasilla, Alaska. Also survived by sister-in-law, Shelly (Tom) Tewes of Peterson, brother-in-law, Mike (Jodi) Wimmer of Spencer, and mother-in-law, Arlene Wimmer, of Royal. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great nephews, aunts and cousins.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Warren (Bus) and Eleanor McMeekin and his father-in-law Norb Wimmer.
