Willard C. Lubbers

March 21, 1919 — December 3, 2008

Willard C. Lubbers, the son of Albertus and Helena Doeksen Lubbers, was born March 21, 1919 in Orange City, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Orange City, where he received his education, graduating from Orange City High School. Later, he continued his education at Northwestern College in Orange City. He entered the military in March of 1941 and served with the U.S. Army during WWII until his honorable discharge in November of 1945. Willard married Dorothy Siderius on April 17, 1946 in Orange City. Following their marriage, they lived in Paullina, Iowa, where he owned Watkins Feed Sales for 40 years, until his retirement in 1989. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, the American Legion, the Lion's Club as well as many other community activities in Paullina. Willard was a lead timer at track meets in Paullina for many years. Dorothy passed away on August 9, 1975. Willard married Virginia Martin on February 28, 1981 in Spencer, Iowa. Following their marriage, he moved to Spencer, where Willard worked in Sales at Shopper's Supply for 10 years, until his complete retirement. He was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer as well as the Lion's Club. He filled in as a lay minister for several area churches. For several years, he enjoyed doing football color for high school area games for KICD radio. He was great at playing Santa Claus at the mall, nursing homes and private homes. Willard passed away at Longhouse Residence in Spencer, Iowa on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his parents; 5 sisters; and one brother. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Virginia of Spencer; one son, Robert Lubbers and his wife, Judy of Columbus, Ohio; one daughter, Thea (Ted) Oberlander and her husband, Al of Des Moines, IA; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a brother, Gilbert Lubbers of Spokane, WA; three step daughters: Debra Neve and her husband, John of Mound, MN, Jan Martin of Miami, FL and Gina Harrison and her husband, Scot of Iowa City, IA; six step grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 P.M., Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer.

The family will greet friends from 12:30 P.M., until the service time at Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer.

INTERMENT
Prairie View Cemetery Paullina, Iowa Graveside services will be held prior to the memorial services at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, December 6 at Prairie View Cemetery in Paullina. Military services will be conducted by the American Legion of Paullina, Iowa. The family requests the memorials be designated to Bethany Lutheran Church or the charity of their choice.
