Bill was born on October 14, 1932 in Newton, Iowa. He spent most of his childhood in Mansfield, Ohio and Waterloo, Iowa. He graduated from West Waterloo High School in 1950. He attended Iowa State College and graduated in 1956 with a degree in Geology and four minors (Zoology, Botany, Forestry and Physics). In college, while on a mapping internship in Montana, Bill found his own field of dreams and favorite travel destination. He met and married his college sweet heart Janet Williams of Ames, Iowa on August 18, 1957. From 1957-1959 Bill served in the U.S. Army in El Paso, Texas and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After his honorable discharge Bill went to work for Phillips Petroleum Company where he was a loyal and successful Sales Representative for 40 years.
Over the years, Bill loved to spend his extra time playing baseball, hunting with his German Shorthaired Pointers, fly-fishing, playing racquetball at the Y, watching or listening to the Cincinnati Reds and talking with friends or meeting someone new. Bill never met a stranger!
Bill is survived by his wife Janet of Spencer; two daughters and their husbands Kathy (Tom) Lee of Denver, Iowa and Kelly (Jim) Berling of Mason, Ohio; grandchildren Rachel and Blake Berling; mother-in-law Ruth Williams, 97, of Spencer and four legged friend Cody.

As the Reds announcer, Marty Brennaman would say, Bill rounded third and headed for home on February 12, 2011 under the professional loving care at Community Memorial Hospital in Hartley, Iowa.
