William 'Bill' Gruhn

March 29, 1913 — September 19, 2009

William "Bill" Gruhn, the son of Ernest August and Anna Marie Trojohn Gruhn, was born March 29, 1913, on a farm south of Hartley, Iowa. He received his education in Moneta Consolidated School. Bill married Velma Margaretha Witt on January 1, 1937, at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley. Following their marriage, they farmed near Primghar from 1937 to 1951 at which time they moved to the farm north of Hartley, where he farmed until retiring on March 10, 1977. He was a long time member of the Trinity United Church of Christ where he also ushered for many years. Bill donated many hours of his time in the building of this church. He also drove the Hartley School bus for 18 years. Bill enjoyed baseball, fishing, bowling, watching professional basketball but most of all, he was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. Bill passed away at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on September 19, 2009, at the age of 96. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Velma on October 3, 2003; his daughter, Marlys Johnson on April 27, 2003; one grandson, Tracy Gruhn; two brothers: Ernest and Arnold. Left to cherish his memory are his three sons: Wendell of Primghar, IA, Ronald and his wife, Ronda of Apple Valley, MN, Gale and his wife, Terry of Spencer, IA; 7 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; one son-in-law, Hugh Johnson of Hartley, IA; his sister, Erna Olhausen of Arnolds Park, IA; his very special friend, Phyllis Stap of May City, IA; other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at the Trinity United Church of Christ
