William 'Bill' Cook, the son of Oscar and Kathryn (Smith) Cook, was born May 31, 1927 in Sioux Falls, SD. His childhood years were spent in Sioux Falls, where he received his early education later graduating from Sioux Falls Washington High School. Bill entered the military and served his country during WWII from 1945 until his honorable discharge in 1946. After his discharge, he continued his education at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD and later attended graduate school at SDSU.
Bill married Vivian Julson on September 16, 1950 in Sioux Falls, SD. Bill taught school in the communities of Madison, SD for 3 years, Groton, SD for 3 years and Avon, SD for one year. In 1957, Bill and Vivian moved to Spencer, Iowa, where he taught school and later was athletic director at Spencer High School. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer. Bill was also a member of the Daybreaker's Kiwanis, the National Athletic Director's Association and the retired A.D.'s Iowa High School Athletic Association. He received the IHSAA service award the N.W. Coaches and Official's Association 'Hall Of Fame Award', was Honorary Referee of the Howard Wood Relays, was District Athletic Director of the year and was elected to the Iowa High School Athletics Association Hall of Fame in 1986.
Bill passed away at the Reflections Care Suites in Northfield, MN on Monday, February 2, 2015 at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Tommy and one sister, Marjorie Williams
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Vivian of Northfield, MN; two sons: William 'Bill' Cook of Waverly, IA and Craig Cook of Northfield, MN; one daughter, Cheryl (Mark) Mixdorf of Dunkerton, IA; five grandchildren; one sister: Elizabeth (Sam) Begeman of Parker, SD; two brothers: Arnold (Mary) Cook of Clarion, IA and Wendell (Delores) Cook of Sioux Falls, SD; other relatives and many friends and past students.
SERVICES
Services will be held at 10:00A.M., Saturday, February 7, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer. There will be a Military Flag Presentation following the service conducted by the American Legion Glen Pedersen Post #1 and the Clay County V.F.W. Post #3159
