William 'Bill' Wendlandt

Family and friends mourn the passing of William Wendlandt. William Charles Wendlandt, the son of William Carl and Mary (Rien) Wendlandt, was born October 15, 1926, in Regal, Minnesota and graduated from Paynesville, Minnesota high school in 1944. In high school, Bill was a recognized athlete, receiving trophies for outstanding athlete of the year. After high school, he entered the military and served with the U.S. Air Force from 1944 to 1945. Bill attended Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa where he graduated with a B.A. degree in education in 1948. Bill played college football and basketball while at Westmar, receiving awards for outstanding play in basketball. He later received a Masters Degree in education from the University of Minnesota. Bill married Anita Wendland on July 17, 1948 in Randloph, Kansas. They started out teaching in the Greenville-Rossie, Iowa area for two years. Then, in 1951, Bill began teaching industrial arts in Spencer, Iowa where he remained for 38 years, having acted as the head basketball coach and assistant football coach for many of those years. He retired from teaching in 1988 and remained active playing golf, fishing and hunting. Bill was also active with the Grace United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, and the Abu Bekr Shriner, particularly enjoying participating in their ATV Corps. Following the death of Anita on April 14, 1994, Bill married Eleanor (Anderson) Lookingbill on November 22, 1995 in Spencer. Bill and Eleanor enjoyed more than 20 years together, living in Spencer and spending their winters in Arizona. Bill passed away on Monday, September 7, 2015 at the age of 88. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Anita; one brother, Millard; and two sisters, Edna Zimmerman and Elverna Krupke. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Eleanor of Spencer; two sons, John Wendlandt and his wife, Diane of Anchorage, Alaska; Bill Wendlandt, Jr. and his wife, Ramona, of Las Vegas, Nevada; Ann (Wendlandt) Silberman and her husband James, of New York, New York, and one granddaughter, Emily Silberman. Bill was also survived by four step-sons: David (Julia Spalla) Lookingbill of Asheville, NC; Dean (Mary) Lookingbill of Vancouver, WA; Darwin (David Potter) Lookingbill of Minneapolis, MN and Duane (Ruth Hograbe) Lookingbill of Annandale, MN; five step-grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held 1:30 P.M., Friday, September 11th Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. There will be a Masonic Service conducted by Evening Shade Lodge #312 A.F. & A.M. followed by an Eastern Star Service beginning at 7:00 P.M., Thursday evening both at the Warner Chapel in Spencer

Riverside Cemetery Spencer, Iowa A Military flag presentation will be held following the committal services at the cemetery.
