William Douglas Magnussen

June 13, 1933 — October 21, 2012

William Douglas Magnussen, son of Ethan Vilhelm and Alma Rasmussen Magnussen, was born June 13, 1933 in Audubon, Iowa. He passed from life through death to life eternal on October 21, 2012 at the age of 79 years after a long illness. Doug was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. He attended school in Audubon, graduating from high school in 1951. He attended Dana College for one year until enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1952. He served in Korea from 1953-1954. On June 6, 1954 he married the love of his life, Macel Hagedorn. They became the parents of two daughters. In 1961 he was appointed Postmaster in Royal, Iowa where he served until 1972. He subsequently served as Postmaster in Hartley, Iowa (1972-1983) and Spencer, Iowa until his retirement in 1990. He served as secretary of the Iowa Chapter of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States and was a member of the Rotary Club of Spencer. After moving to Texas, Doug became an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in McAllen,TX. Throughout his life he was a devout church member, serving on numerous committees and councils. He loved fishing, especially with his brother Karl. He enjoyed golfing and cruising as often as he could. He delighted in his 4 grandchildren and 16 nieces and nephews and he could be counted on to tease everyone equally. His sense of humor was contagious and he saw the good in everyone. There was rarely a dull moment when he was around! He was also a source of quiet strength and a role model of the highest integrity and social responsibility--always willing to help anyone in need. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by Macel, his loving wife of 58 years, his daughters, Paula (Paul) DiMascio of Braintree, MA and Pam (Jay) Ironside of Prairie du Sac, WI, his grandchildren Andrew Ironside (Delani Gunawardena) of Columbus, OH, Emily Ironside of Iowa City, and Elizabeth and Katherine DiMascio of Braintree, MA, his sister Jane (Phil) Jorgensen of Cedar Rapids, IA, his brother Karl (Alice) Magnussen of Grimes, IA, and many relatives and friends.
