Timothy Berton Menke, DDS, FAGD, age 69, son of Lester and Kathlyn Menke, passed away on April 8, 2021, in Spencer, Iowa, in hospice care following a short illness.

Tim was born on November 21, 1951, in Cherokee, Iowa, and grew up on a farm near Calumet. He was an energetic and fun-loving child who was active in 4-H, showing livestock at the O'Brien County Fair. Tim served as president of the 1970 class at Sutherland Community High School, where he played basketball, ran track, participated in drama, music, forensics, and was a member of the National Honor Society. He attended the University of South Dakota and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry in 1974. Upon graduation, he enrolled in the University of Iowa Dental School, graduating in 1977.

Dr. Menke ran a successful dental practice in Cherokee for more than forty years, providing the community with compassionate dental care. He viewed it as an honor and privilege to serve his patients, who fondly referred to him as "Doc." Tim was a life-long learner who earned a Fellowship Award from the Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD) in 2011. He also acted as a clinical training mentor for CEREC CAD-CAM technology at the Scottsdale Center for Dentistry in Scottsdale, AZ from 2013-2014. Tim was a member of the Academy of General Dentistry and the American Dental Association. He served a term as President of the Iowa Academy of General Dentistry.

Tim took great pride in serving three terms on the Cherokee School Board and was board president for eight years. He served on the Bethlehem Lutheran Church council and was involved in many community organizations, including the Jaycees, Rotary Club, and the Cherokee Community Theatre.

After retiring in 2019, he moved to Spencer with his significant other, Linda Mann. Tim enjoyed studying piano, gardening, golfing, boating, camping, fishing, and traveling. He also had a love of grilling and cooking. Tim was a man of strong faith, attending Hope Church in Spencer and was a member of the men's Bible study group.

He is survived by his significant other, Linda Mann of Spencer; son, Nicholas Menke (Ruta Pareigis Menke) of Davenport; daughter, Abby Menke Freeman (Brad Freeman) of Austin, Texas; former wife, Virginia Menke of Cherokee; brother, Daniel Menke (Patricia) of Calumet; sisters, Anne Menke (Sarah Dumke) of Las Cruces, New Mexico; and Sarah Menke-Fish (Don Fish) of Potomac, Maryland. He will be missed by his four adoring grandchildren, Nolan, Aubree, Evelina, and McKenna, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He is also fondly remembered by Linda's family: Darren (Raquel) Mann of Murray; Lisa (Todd) Cline of Altoona; and Linda's grandchildren Tyler (Ashley) Christle, Caitlyn Christle, Kathleen (Roger) Kelly, Cody, Sierra, and Savannah Mann; Linda's great-grandchildren, Khia, Addison, Claire, Beckett, and William, and all of Linda's siblings. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Kathlyn Menke, brother, David, and sister, Mary, who passed away of Spina Bifida at a young age.

At Tim's request, the family will hold a private graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Spina Bifida Association,

www.spinabifidaassociation.org/ways-to-donate/  Under "Give Online," select "Donate in memory or in honor of", or a gift in Dr. Menke’s memory to support the College of Dentistry Patient Assistance Fund at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics. “Our deepest condolences to the Menke family! Tim was the kindest, most caring, humble man. We remember the time our elderly parents Lloyd n LaVera Rehder had tooth problems. He did not charge for their visit. Calumet was always remembered by him. We connected on Facebook and chatted about many things. As former Calumet Indians ourselves, he always ended the conversation with “We are the Indians, mighty, mighty Indians”. He will truly be missed by his many friends/acquaintances. Praying the many happy memories of your father, grandpa, friend will heal your sad heart! I can hear him chanting in heave- We are ............!”

“Dear Linda, Nick, and Abby: I want you all to know how much I valued the loving friendship I shared with Tim. He was such a valued friend and confidante to me over the last 40 years. We could share almost anything with each other without judgement, and he was such a support to me after my divorce (as I tried to be for him). We shared many laughs together, especially our annual trips to the College World Series. But we also talked politics, faith topics, and people we both admired. He was such an outstanding role model, and whether on the golf course, school event, or social gathering, his character never changed.....always honorable. Our friendship will be forever held in the highest regard.
My sympathies,
Dennis R. Harrison”

“Remembering Tim, when I came to his office he always greeted me with "Hi, Mrs. Ducommun". I told him after 50 years it was time to call me Bonnie. His reply was, "It just doesn't feel right". I was his sister Sarah's first grade teacher. We always talked about the ones we knew from our time in Sutherland.

“I met Dr. Menke in 1997 after showing interest in dental assisting. He and Ginni took a chance on me and I have loved the profession since. He was not only a mentor, but a friend who was not only good to me, but my family. My heart is heavy, but smiled today as I reminisced with friends and family about the good times we had. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

“I switched to Dr Menke after my son had a bad experience with a different dentist. My son is a survivor of brain injury and is not fond of people doing things with oral care or anything head related except hair cuts. Dr Menke is the 1st dentist who took their time to earn my son's trust and develop a relationship. It may have taken until the 3rd visit but Dr Menke was finally able to do what no other dentist had done previously. He even convinced my son to let the tech polish his teeth right before he retired. He was truly amazing and such a gentle soul with my son. He helped my son realize that it is ok to go to the dentist. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.”

“Tim has become one with the ages now. He and I were friends for 55 years, starting at a county fair 4-H calf show of long ago and now ending upon his entrance into The Lord's Holy Kingdom. His earthly life has ended, but his ETERNAL LIFE has just begun. I imagine the Lord is already getting articulate instructions as to how to properly prepare barbecued pulled pork. Rest in Peace, Doc, until we meet again--over an early-morning cup of coffee...”

“So sorry to hear of Tim's passing. Tim was my dentist for over 30 years. He had a great memory, always asking if my kids were still doing whatever he had remembered them last doing. He loved to tell the story of my dad inviting him to his garden (which was a great honor) and how much he enjoyed visiting my dad and learning about gardening from him. Rest in peace, Doc . Until we meet again.”

“Dr. Menke was one in a million. With every visit to the clinic he would ask the boys about their latest 4-H beef project, how they did showing and even shared his 4-H memories. When our youngest son took a gate to the face, he waited after hours in his office while he had stitches at the hospital, then jumped in when we got there to make sure he didn't lose his front teeth.. He made you feel like you were the most important patient and person when you were in his chair. Again, one in a million! We would like to express our deepest sympathies in his passing. Our thoughts are with you all.”
