John Henry Elbert was born September 6, 1934, at Whittemore, Iowa, to August Elbert and Clotilda Kaschmitter Elbert. He attended Presentation Academy until 1951, when the family moved to LuVerne, Iowa, where he graduated from LuVerne High School in 1952.

Following graduation, he farmed with his father and worked at various part time jobs. In 1956, John joined the United States Navy, serving two years. He then returned to farm with his family.

On June 25, 1960, he was united in marriage to Gertrude (Trudy) Galloway in Laurens, Iowa. Five children were born to the family.

In 1964, the family moved to Spencer, Iowa, where John worked at and later managed Bjornstad Hardware. When the business was sold, he began working for A&M Laundry where he remained until retirement in 2004.

John was a member of Sacred Heart Church where he served as an usher and Eucharistic minister. He was a member of the Spencer Lions Club where he served in several offices, was honored as Lion of the Year, and received the Melvin Jones Award.

John loved watching his children and grandchildren at their activities and ball games. He coached Cap League, Little League and Pony League baseball for many years.

John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Trudy, children: Mike Elbert (Renee) of Kansas City, MO, Julie Moran (Rob) of Ruthven, IA, Lynn Nielsen (Dennis), Roland, IA, Janette Nelson (Jim) of West Okoboji, IA, Kyle Elbert (Cindy) of Bloomington, MN, fifteen grandchildren, Brandon, Nick, Jared, Adam, Rachel, Emily, Shane, Nicole, Kayla, Ryan, Garrett, Amy, Kristin, Jack and Emma, and ten great grandchildren Eisley, Cooper, Leona, Oliver, Ossie, Charlotte, Vera, Tatum, Dallas and Talyn.

“Dear Rob and Julie, Rachel, Emily, and Shane, and all of the Elbert family,
We are so sorry to read that Julie's dad has lost his battle with dementia. It was a long journey and your mom cared for him with such love and devotion. Your video tribute beams with pride, love, and family support. We are sorry for your loss but rejoice in a live well lived, and that your dad now rests in the Lord. It is apparent that he left a wonderful legacy for all of you. During this time of sorrow, may you always be aware of the Lord's abiding love, and may many, many wonderful memories sustain you in the days ahead. Tom and Mary Galik”

“John you were the role model of what a husband, father, grandfather and friend should be and I aspire to be able to walk a path as clear and pure as to what I’ve witnessed from you throughout the years. You were always quick to assist someone, slow to anger and extremely patient; not once did I ever see or hear you raise your voice in anger. Heaven definitely has a place reserved for you and I pray you’ll wait for us. It was a pleasure to have you as my father-in-law and I’m so proud to have known you over the years and share some laughs, some memories and a few games of cribbage. Please know Trudy will have all the love and help she needs from her family and friends. I miss you John, you will always be in my thoughts and prayers.”

“I had the pleasure of working with John at Bjornstad Hardware in the early 1970s when I was in high school. Not only was he a great mentor who taught me how to do my job and work with the public, he was a friend as well. I've told many that I learned as much working with John and the others at the store as I did within the walls of the high school, and that is not stretching the truth. My condolences to Trudy and your family. His passing is a big loss to everyone who knew him.”
