Virginia (Deda) Myrtle Behrens, daughter of Ebb and Eva (Brown) Brinkley was born April 24, 1924, in Clay County, Iowa, where her childhood years were spent.  She graduated from Spencer High School on May 19, 1941.  She was baptized in 1942, and confirmed at First English Lutheran Church on March 30, 1947, in Spencer, Iowa.

Virginia married Milo (Mike) Koenck in Royal, Iowa, on October 14, 1945.  To this union two daughters were born.  Milo passed away in 1964.

On November 27, 1970, Virginia and Ervin Behrens were married at First English Lutheran Church in Spencer, Iowa, and farmed north of Everly until retirement.  Ervin passed away in 2010.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Ervin and Mike; seven brothers:  George, Wes, Verne, Dale, Kenneth, Roy and Donald; six sisters:  Lela Swanson, Helen Hoffman, Loretta Iverson, Ruby Fitzloff, Margaret Johanson and Mary Schoning.

Virginia is survived by daughters:  Karla (David) Clegg of Vancouver, WA, and Cindy Koenck of Longmont, CO; stepchildren:  Leo (Kathy) Behrens of Everly, IA, Dorothy Brinkley (Gary) of Hampton, IA, Donna Hazelton of Owatonna, MN, Mary Luchtel of Byron, MN, and Paul (Kris) Behrens of Spencer, IA; 11 grandchildren; 13-great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Virginia enjoyed gardening, flowers, playing cards and games (especially Scrabble) and family gatherings.  She was a great cook and will long be remembered by her family for those great chocolate brownies and her famous macaroni and cheese.  If you hadn’t studied Scrabble dictionary, it was hard to compete against her.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church at 1525 Three Cross RD, Milford, IA 51351 to help build their new drive-in worship complex.

“Karla & Cindy: The picture of your mother is perfectly "her". She was always smiling. Remembering all the years we went to church together, (a few years ago). I remember your dad well. I sell baked good as the Spirit Lake Farmers Market Sat. a.m. till noon, so I won't be able to be at your mother's funeral, however I will try to get back to Spencer and see you at the luncheon. Your mother was a lovely woman and lived a great life. My sympathy to you. Karen Lunsman Wee”

“I got acquainted with Virginia at Heritage Landing. She was my Dad's neighbor and also his classmate in Spencer High School. They graduated together. Lots of laughter, lots of card playing, and bingo playing went on. I loved Virginia! She was a lot of fun! I am sure she is enjoying her Heavenly Home now, and at peace, meeting up with those who went before her. Thanks for the good times and friendship, Virginia!!”

“Oh, how my whole family loved Deda! We cherish memories visiting Deda and Erv many summers with Cindy at their farm and at their lake home. Deda was beautiful, fun, loving, kind, generous and a fabulous cook! I still make many of her recipes and think of her with a smile when I do. What a blessing she was to all of us who had the privilege of knowing her! She will be so deeply missed. ”

“I'm so sorry, Cindy! You are in my heart. I can't think of another Mother and Daughter who had more fun together and loved each other more than you and Deda did. You were always so happy whenever you were with her and every time you talked about her. Everyone loved your mom and you made her so happy and proud! I'm sending you my love as always and most especially at this time of having to say good-bye to your mother. You were so blessed to have each other for so many years but that doesn't lessen the loss and loss that you feel. Love, Susan”
