Joe Allen Mugge, the son of Bennett and Patricia Mugge was born February 4th, 1959, in Spencer, IA.  He was baptized at First Congregational Church of Spencer, IA, and confirmed at United Methodist Church in Royal, IA.  His childhood years were spent in Royal, Iowa where he graduated from Clay Central-Everly in 1977.

Joe married Julie Anne Mickelson in 1985.  Following their marriage, they lived in Lewisville, TX, where they started a family with the birth of their sons, Jeb Augustus Mugge and Josh Arthur Mugge. After a few years in Texas, they moved to Cherokee, Iowa to raise their children and be near their families.

As a bricklayer and stonemason by trade, he was known to rarely ever miss a day of work and became a foreman for the masonry companies he worked for over the years.  Joe loved to spend time with his family and enjoyed manning the charcoal grill entertaining friends and family.  Sports, specifically the Dallas Cowboys and Iowa Hawkeyes, remained a major part and interest throughout his life that he also shared with his sons.

He was the type of man who would give you the shirt off his back and always left you with a smile on your face. Joe enjoyed bringing out the best in others whether it was his co-workers, family, or friends.  He was actively involved in Alcoholics Anonymous in the last decade of his life and recently received his ten-year sobriety chip.

Joe passed away suddenly at Loring Hospital in Sac City, IA on July 31st, 2021, at the age of 62.  Joe was preceded in death by his grandparents and parents.  Left to cherish his memory are his three siblings: Jeff Mugge, Carol (Brian) Kipfer, and Nancy (William) Metcalf; former spouse: Julie Mugge; significant other: Ellie Bell.  Joe is survived by many friends and loved ones, namely his sons Jeb Mugge and Josh (Nicki) Mugge; to whom he meant the world.

Memorial Services will be held at 1:30 P.M., Friday, August 6, 2021 at Warner Chapel in Spencer.

A Memorial Fund has been established in Memory of Joe.

“I haven't seen Joe Mugge in over 30 years, but I wish I would have had the opportunity to run into him again. I was from Spencer and Joe from Royal, but we crossed paths on occasion at the Lakes or watching the Hawkeyes in Spencer when we were both strapping young lads. Joe was a good guy, with a big heart way back then, as others have stated. Sounds like he was doing well, which I'm happy to hear after all these years. Gone too soon.

My sincere condolences to his family.

R.I.P. Joe Mugge”

“My deepest sympathy goes to his family and Ellie definitely ellie and Joe made a great pair we definitely miss you like crazy Joe. I am very honored that Joe and ellie have came into my live I remember we needed help with our basement wall and Joe offered to help and he helped and did an amazing job and all he wanted in return was 24 pack of Pepsi and supper for the hard work he did that day and I will forever be grateful for that cause he didn't have to do that but he was helping just a young couple fix the foundation to there house with out asking for any kind of payment but knowing Joe and ellie I had to get them something for helping us out and Joe loved to grill so I know it wasn't much 1 day I surprised ellie with some steaks that Joe could grill up and have a great steak. Thanks again for helping me and Dylan Joe we very much appreciate that!! ”

“To the Mugge family - Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you! It doesn't seem that long ago that we lived on Meadow Street in Royal. Those were the good old days, weren't they? I even remember when we spent time at the Lazy Lagoon on West Lake. Your Grandma and Grandpa (Gib & Jeanne) Wilson had that cafe or store. They were so nice and we all had so much fun swimming and boating. Joe was much too young to leave us....God bless all of you.”
