Shirley Ann Hamrick was born on Feb. 3, 1930, in Sioux Rapids, IA to Aron and Clara (Johnson) Barstad.  She grew up on the family farm, was confirmed in the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids, and graduated from Cornell High School. She loved to sing and was involved in many school and church activities.
She married Arden (Denny) Hamrick on June 12, 1947.  They lived in California before returning to Iowa and making their home in Webb in 1951.  Denny was in the general construction business until his death in 1992.  She was a great mom to their 6 children, and a wonderful grandma and great grandma.  She was warm and loving, patient and kind, encouraging and fun.
Shirley could do so many things, and over the years she made blue jeans for Aalfs Manufacturing, cooked and drove a school bus for South Clay Schools, painted and hung wallpaper.  A book lover, she worked for the Webb Library and read 100 books a year. Generous with her time and talents, she held many roles at Webb United Methodist Church, and volunteered in her community, for the Clay County Immunization Clinic and for Hospice. She always had time for coffee with her many friends.
She was a wonderful seamstress and enjoyed making clothes for her herself, her children and grandchildren, fancy doll clothes for a dollmaker, and created beautiful quilts.    Shirley and Denny collected stoneware, and spent many happy days going to auctions, antique shops and stoneware conventions. She was always ready for new adventures and enjoyed traveling in the USA and around the world with her family.  She had a sunny personality, a quick smile, a great laugh, and was always welcoming.
Shirley passed away at St. Lukes Lutheran Home in Spencer on August 30, 2021, at age 91. She is survived by her children: Teresa Robertson, Webb; Janet (Tom) Hansen, Webb; Joan (Peter) Riley, Cedar Rapids, IA; Mark (Mona) Hamrick, St. Cloud, MN; Craig (Cindy) Hamrick, Le Mars, IA; and Tony (Jill) Hamrick, Grand Junction, CO; 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren who all adored her; sister-in-law, Marlene Hamrick; nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Aron and Clara Barstad; parents-in-law, Howard and Ruth Hamrick; husband, Denny; son-in-law, Ben Robertson; brother, Arnold Barstad; sister, Lois Hanson; and brother-in-law, Jack Hamrick.

“I am feeling bad that these words of sympathy are belated and certainly hope they are still seen by some of Shirley's family. I got the sad news belatedly and then was traveling. It has been ages since I have seen any of you, but I did get to see your dear, sweet mother from time to time over the years. My mother treasured Shirley's friendship. I am so glad they had many good coffee times together. Take care, all of you. Nancy Carlson Johannes”

“Tony, Craig, Mark, sisters, and extended family: I was so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. I remember the last time I saw your mom...it was when I came back home for Dad's memorial in 2006. She and Darlene Enderton were walking down the street and I must have talked to them for at least an hour. Your mom always had a way of making everyone feel welcome; she was positive and spunky and just had a way about her that made one smile. She made me feel so special that day, providing me one last positive memory of Webb. Losing a mom is not easy -- be kind to one another and yourselves during this difficult time, and know that your mom was proud of each and every one of you. Once again, my sincere condolences. ”

“to family of Shirley Hamrick, May God comfort you with happy memories as you prepare to honor your dear matriarch and bid loving farewell to her life on earth. What a blessing to know Shirley! I will always smile the memory of her smile and infectious laughter. She was small but strong and able to maneuver big school bus as well as anyone. With her patience kind heart and spunk she had the key to making rowdy kids settle down and behave-not because they were scared of her but because like everyone they adored her. I love whenever I got to visit with Shirley and catch up on news of her family. She was and is so proud of you. I know you will forever hold her in your hearts. God’s peace my friends, LaVonne”
