David Frederick Reed, the son of Ivan “Lou” & Mary Lou ( Johnson) Reed, was born January 1, 1966 in Spencer, Iowa.  His childhood years were spent in Spencer, where he received his education, graduating from Spencer High School in 1984.  He later continued his education, graduating from Morningside College in 1988.  David attended Thunderbird International School of Business in Glendale, AZ, (suburb of Phoenix) where he received his Masters Degree in Business.

David was active with the band, choir and theatre at Spencer High School and during his senior year, he was selected to play trombone in the All State Band. He attended Morningside College, where he sang in the choir and played trombone in the band. David was active in the Cub and Boy Scouts and was awarded Eagle Scout at age 15 from Boy Scout Troop 123 in Spencer. While at Thunderbird, he attended summer school which included living with a Spanish speaking family in Mexico.

David moved to Chicago, where he worked for Motorola for 20 years, as a buyer of parts. While living there, he became a Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. David developed many close friends living in the Chicago area while attending Christ Church of Oakbrook and College Church of Wheaton.

He loved to travel. Some of the places he visited while being a buyer was the United States, Mexico, China, Vietnam, Japan, Italy and England. He moved to West Bend, WI, for 10 years. His main job was working for John Deere as a buyer, this was the same type of job as he had with Motorola, which included travel to foreign countries.

He belonged to toastmasters for many years. He organized a brand new club within the John Deere plant where he worked. He held a variety of offices on the local, regional and state levels. David played trombone in River City Irregulars, which is a band of about 50 musicians. The group is based in West Bend and they rehearse and perform year round. David loved mission trips and every year  for many years he went to Foreign Countries. He used his own money and his vacation time. He traveled with a small group to an organized established mission. He’s been to Russia 7 times, Ukraine 3 times, Czech Republic 3 times, Brazil and many others.

David was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in West Bend, WI. He recently attended St. Andrews Lutheran Church playing in the Brass Group.

He passed away at his home on Monday, November 15, 2021, in West Bend, WI, at the age of 55.

Left to cherish his memory are his parents: Ivan “Lou” and Mary Lou Reed of Spencer; two sisters: Anne Marie Reed and Karen Reed of Cedar Falls, IA; other relatives and friends.

“We met Dave at College Church where we both were involved in Music Ministry. My young sons, including one who also played trombone, always loved to talk to Dave. Dave always had a kind word for them which was extra special as they knew him as the a TV star—the host of “Trackside”. He always took time to talk trains with them and made a special point of asking them about which trains they had recently seen or visited. I always appreciated his kindness to these children to whom he remained always approachable with welcome smile and an engaging question. Please accept our condolences on your loss. I sure he is rejoicing in his permanent home. ”

We also interacted with him in the ISI (International Students, Inc) outreach to international students in the Chicago area. Please know we will pray for your family as you grieve, and we will certainly celebrate our reunion in Heaven on of these days!”

“I met David via his enthusiasm for Toastmasters, yet his service to God is what I will remember the most. David was a servant in the true sense of the word. Philippians 1:21 is the verse that immediately comes to mind when I think of David. He knew the purpose of his time here on earth. He will be greatly missed. The below link provides context for this verse.

“As a fellow musician, I had the honor of playing with Dave in three different musical groups over the past couple of years. We played our last gig together on November 7th at our church. He lived out his faith in all that he did, and he encouraged young (and old) individuals in their faith and musical pursuits. He was such a caring individual and will be missed dearly. His cactus tag on his trombone case was a fun conversation piece. I intend to find some that look like it to give to current and future bandmates in memory of him. He was always optimistic, energetic, positive, encouraging, and brought such joy to our groups. ”

“This caught me by surprise. I am deeply shocked and saddened by David's untimely death. In the time that I got to know him, he was a good friend and mentor; he was mentoring me on getting into Thunderbird School of Global Management. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family that he left behind. I feel that though he died before his time, I pray that we all see him in the second Advent of Christ. I will also promise him that I will get into Thunderbird School of Global Management as he also wished to see me get admitted into it as well. ”

“I sat next to Dave at John Deere Horicon Works for the 2 years I was a buyer. He and I were "cube quad mates". There was always the same 3 to 4 buyers there later in the evenings after most had gone home and we had to move to sensor activate the lights back on. Dave was incredibly welcoming to me, being new in the area and in the role. He got me plugged into Institute of Supply Management (ISM) and would frequently swap stories with me. Dave was an unknown mentor to me up until his last day at John Deere Horicon Works. When I heard of him leaving, I was sad but also was happy for him to move onto the next stage of his life as he deserved it. Rest in peace Dave. ”

“David will be greatly missed. I truly thought of him as my idol when I was growing up. I'll never forget the times he took me for a ride in his Jeep. We continued to stay in touch as adults including a couple of trips to the Chicago Auto Show. David has a true love of God and you could see it in the ways he lived his life. I have no doubt that we have another angel looking down on us from heaven. My love and prayers go out to the entire Reed family. This is a huge loss for those of us left on earth, but an even larger gain for heaven.”
