Eleanor Mary Nielsen, the daughter of John and Jessie Stoner Reed, was born August 9, 1917, at their farm home in Peterson, IA.  She lived on a farm NW of Peterson through her graduation from Peterson High School in 1934.  She started first grade at age 5 because her father drove the school bus. Following graduation, she spent a year in the education program at Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls.

Her first six years of teaching occurred in country schools in the area.  Many times she told her family that she had countless great memories of these six years especially enjoying games at recess with the students.  She spent the next three years teaching First grade in Royal where she met Herbert.  When she signed a contract in Hartley, Herb quickly gave her a diamond so he wouldn’t lose her.

They were married on March 27, 1949 at the Methodist Church in Peterson.  They lived in Royal until 1952 when they moved to the Reed farm on Highway 10.  They had three sons and when Tony started school in 1960, Eleanor began 20 years teaching in the Sioux Valley School system until retiring in 1980, finishing 30 years of teaching.

Then we would almost say that she started her second profession of Golf, which she enjoyed for the rest of her life.  She received many accolades for her skills and enjoyment of the sport.

Eleanor passed away on October 17, at the age of 105.  She was preceded in death by husband, Herbert; her daughter-in-law, Joy; her parents; her sister, Ina Joy; her brother, David Reed and twin sisters, Margaret Pierce and Marjorie Pritts.

Eleanor’s three sons: Rick, John and Anton, three grandchildren: Dana (Beau) Huberg, Jodi (Marcus Reeder) Nielsen, and Zachary (Sara) Nielsen; five great grandchildren:  Hudson and Greta Huberg and Theo, Anders and Soren Nielsen; nieces and nephews; three Godchildren and every student she ever taught are here to celebrate her life.

“Because we knew her, we will be changed for good.”

“Eleanor was such a caring person. I remember she and two of her friends visiting nursing home residents and she was older than the people she was visiting. She loved people and it was always good to visit with her at school reunions. Oh what a memory she had. ”

“So sorry for your loss. She also was a treasured teacher to me! I went to Brooke School for kindergarten and first grade so Eleanor was my first teacher in Peterson. It was quite a transition because all of us were being sent to different schools back then but she made it very good for us but I do remember she was very strict, but we learned it was the best and truly loved and respected her! She will be missed by all! You have our deepest sympathy💜”

“Eleanor was so special to me. When I started going to church with my mom in Royal Eleanor was there ready to welcome us. She went out of her way to talk to me and help me feel loved. As every year passed I was in awe of how active she still was since time just kept passing and she never slowed down. She always made me feel special and like everything I did was great. When she found out I was going to school to become a teacher she was so excited to tell me all about her experience. I am so appreciative of the time I had with her and the impact she had on my life. Although I won't be able to be there for her memorial I will still honor her life. ”

“Miss Reed was teaching at Trimello Country School 4 miles west of Royal and she ask my parents to send me to school at the age of 4 along with another 4 year old. So she ended up with 4 Shirley's in school. Always enjoyed visiting with her through the years and she catching up on how her students were doing. Shirley Buhrman Roghair”

“Miss Reed was an important lady to me beginning as a student in her 1st grade classroom. The highlight for me was her breaking me of the habit of sucking my finger. She put a clean white sock on my hand. My mother continued the routine at home each night at bedtime. When I returned to Royal to visit my family, she always asked about my teaching career. Even after I left the public schools, we would talk about my career as a professor at Wichita State University training students to become teachers. A highlight was always seeing her at the Royal alumni reunions. Eleanor was a very special lady.”

“I am so sorry to hear of the loss of one of the best teachers in Sioux Valley. To the family of Mrs. Nielsen I send my deepest sympathies. We lived by all of them as I was growing up and road the bus with the boys. Mrs. Nielsen helped me so much with math when I was younger ( before I got diagnosed with epilepsy) she took time out everyday to help me. We did not know at that time my attention was pulled away with simple seizures then. I think about the times we would go and visit and check out the kitties on the farm. She will be missed by all. Again you will always be cherished by myself and others. Thank you for your service at school and being a friend as well. Love to all.”
